Japan-Oregon Ties
A weekend trip to Portland gave Ambassador Sugiyama a chance to celebrate many aspects of the deep cultural and economic ties between Japan and Oregon! His visit included Portland Japanese Garden’s 55th Anniversary Gala, where he met with Governor Kate Brown and toured the facility, which he called “A wonderful place that transports me not just home to Japan-but to a place of timeless beauty and tranquility.”
Ambassador Sugiyama also had a chance to see up-close some of the companies benefiting from Japan-US cooperation. He started the weekend at Nike’s Portland HQ, where he visited the Japanese garden that commemorates the relationship between Nike and Japanese trading company Nissho Iwai in the company’s early days. And during visits to food company Ajinomoto and United Grain Corporation – UGC, he got a detailed look at both companies’ operations.
