NC Japan Center Summer Camp 2019: 

We’re looking for 10 high school age campers (14-18 yrs. old) to come and learn about Japanese culture and language! Contact NC Japan Center Director Jonathan Brewster for more details (jhbrewst@ncsu.edu). 

Five-day summer camp: Monday, June 17th – Friday, June 21st
Tuition: $300/camper – Camp size: 10 campers
Camp time: Drop off: 9:30AM / Pick up: 5:00PM (camp shall start at 10:00AM and wrap up at 4:30PM)

Lunch shall be provided for all five days: Lunch will be at an NC State dining hall, and this is included in the $300 tuition. The NC Japan Center will have limited Japanese drinks and snacks for our campers; they are strongly encouraged to bring their own drinks from home (please do not bring snacks). If any campers require medication during the program period, they must bring their own medication and administer it, themselves. The same goes for Epi-pens.

Basic Camp Schedule:
9:30 – 10:00AM: Camper drop-off at Spring Hill House

10:00 – 11:30AM: Japanese language class (beginner level) (one 5-minute break at 10:45AM)

11:30AM – 12:45PM: Lunch at an NC State Dining Hall
12:45 – 1:15PM: Japanese Meditation (Qigong “Kiko” or “Zazen”)

1:15 – 3:30PM: Japanese crafts workshops (origami, “shodo” (calligraphy), making Japanese lanterns, “manga art class,” Field Trip or Japanese film /Anime, about Japan DVD (field trips: Sarah P. Duke Japanese Gardens / Teahouse, NC State Arboretum, Toyo Shokuhin, Japanese restaurant)

3:30 – 4:30PM: Language Review (Japanese conversation using practical topics) 4:30 – 5:00PM: / Wrap-up / Camper Pick-up at Spring Hill House

Any camper picked up after 5:05PM will incur $1/per minute late. Cash only! Jonathan and Reiko will stay until all campers have been picked up by their parent/legal guardian. A parent/legal guardian shall have to sign a registration book when dropping off their child in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon. Self-driving campers shall be provided a waiver they will sign and return to NC Japan Center.

All field trips shall require all campers to ride in an NC State vehicle; vehicles shall be driven by Jonathan and Reiko only.
All parents/legal guardians are encouraged to download the “On Campus” app in order to be notified of emergencies at NC State University.
