Tuscaloosa Sakura Festival (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Saturday, April 9, 2016
The Green at Midtown Village
1800 McFarland Blvd. East Tuscaloosa, AL 35404 The 30th anniversary of the Sakura Festival offers the community an opportunity to experience Japanese culture. Through an exciting variety of cultural exhibits and performances, we hope to increase understanding of the country and people of Japan.
In traditional Japanese thought, the time of ohanami, or viewing of the cherry blossoms, reminds one of the paradoxically fleeting yet enduring nature of life, which is symbolized in the single moment when a cherry blossom petal detaches itself to float earthward. In contemporary Japan, friends joyfully gather whenever the cherry trees, called sakura, blossom.
Ohanami is delightful on the UA campus at the corner of University Boulevard and Stadium Drive. Takemine Mochizuki of Narashino City donated the cherry trees at Shelton State Community College, as well as those in the Narashino Grove of Lurleen Wallace Boulevard.

Macon Cherry Blossom Festival (Macon, GA)
March 17 – April 3, 2016
794 Cherry Street
Macon, GA 31201
Each March, Macon becomes a pink, cotton-spun paradise as over 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in all their glory. Festival-lovers are treated to one of the most extravagant displays of springtime color in the nation as they visit the town referred to by Congressional Records as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World.
Originally a sleepy southern town, Macon has now become a bustling center of beauty and international friendship. The Festival’s roots began with a man who possessed a deep appreciation for beauty and a passion for horticulture. The man in question was none other than the late William A. Fickling Sr., a local realtor, who discovered the first Yoshino cherry tree in Macon while strolling about in his backyard. The year was 1949, and at the time of his discovery, he was unaware that the tree was a Yoshino species, rare to the South. Awed by the tree’s unique beauty, he began inquiring around town as to what species of tree it was. But, no one knew, not even his own gardener!
