Japan in the News
Rui Hachimura recently became the first Japanese player to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. Hachimura, who previously played with Gonzaga University in Spokane, will now join the Washington Wizards in DC. In a recent article, Ambassador Sugiyama expressed his excitement about Hachimura coming to Washington DC. “I know that his presence here will help to grow the strong sports and culture ties between Japan and the U.S., particularly with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games coming next summer,” he said. Fans should look out for Hachimura in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics playing on Japan’s basketball team!

Strengthening Economic Ties
“The Select USA Summit has become a key opportunity to continue building strong Japan-US economic ties, and I hope tonight was the start to many new projects.” Ambassador Sugiyama was pleased to host the Select USA Reception at his Residence, an event focused on growing Japan-US business partnerships. Japanese Shochu
You may know Japanese sake, but have you heard of shochu? it is a distilled alcoholic beverage unique to Japan. Kagoshima Prefecture is one of Japan’s largest shochu producers. A recent event at the Old Residence brought Kagoshima distillers and local DC mixologists together to present exciting new shochu creations for our guests to sample. Local chefs provided original dishes to compliment the variety of shochu being served.
