Strong Japan-US economic, security, and diplomatic ties were in the spotlight last weekend, as US President Donald Trump and top US officials visited Japan. The President kicked off the visit with remarks at Yokota Air Base which were followed by a round of golf at the planned golf venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and dinner with Prime Minister Abe. President Trump also made a State Call on the Emperor and Empress of Japan at the Imperial Palace and later met with the families of Japanese citizens who have been abducted by North Korea.
Prime Minister Abe and President Trump confirmed that both countries are 100% together on the issue of North Korea, and that the US commitment to the region is unwavering, backed by the US presence and based on the robust Japan-US alliance. President Trump also reconfirmed the ironclad US commitment to Japan’s defense through the full range of US military capabilities, both nuclear and conventional.

President Trump Greets Troops at Yokota Air Base
President Donald Trump started his visit to Japan at Yokota Air Base outside of Tokyo. The President spoke to a crowd of Japanese Self Defence Force members, American servicemen and women and their families before boarding a helicopter for his first meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In his remarks, he called Japan “a treasured partner and crucial ally of the United States.”
Serving together across Japan, tens of thousands of American men and women in uniform build lasting bonds with their Japanese counterparts. This weekend’s Veterans Day holiday gives us a chance to honor service members past and present, and invite them to learn more about the Japan-U.S Military Program (JUMP) to stay connected to Japan.
President Trump Meets With Business Leaders in Japan
In remarks at an event with business leaders, President Trump hailed investments by Japanese companies including Toyota, Honda, and Denso which are creating thousands of jobs in the US, remarking that “I also want to recognize the business leaders in the room whose confidence in the United States — they’ve been creating jobs — you have such confidence in the United States, and you’ve been creating jobs for our country for a long, long time.”
Ivanka Trump Speaks at WAW!2017
First Daughter Ivanka Trump was also in Japan last week for the 4th World Assembly for Women (WAW!2017). There were remarks from Ivanka Trump, Prime Minister Abe and Foreign Minister Kono as well as a final panel discussion on supporting women entrepreneurs. In his remarks, the Prime Minister announced that the number of female executives in Japan has doubled in the last five years, and vowed that Japan would continue to lead on Women’s Empowerment issues.
