長崎県・五島列島のとある島の中学校。合唱部顧問の松山ハルコは産休に入るため、代わって松山の中学時代の同級生、「元神童で自称ニート」の臨時教員・柏木ユリに、1年間の期限付きで合唱部の指導を依頼する。

それを知ったその学校の中学生の中には柏木の美貌目当てに合唱部に入部したいという男子生徒が続出、桑原サトル・向井ケイスケ・三田村リクらが入部したが、もともと合唱部には女子しかおらず、以前から合唱部に所属していた仲村ナズナ・長谷川コトミ・辻エリなど、受け入れる側の女子生徒と軋轢が生じる。さらに柏木は7月に諫早市で行われるNHK全国学校音楽コンクール長崎県大会出場にあたっても独断で男子との混声での出場を決め、合唱部の男女生徒間の対立は深まるばかり。

その一方、柏木は課題曲「手紙 ～拝啓 十五の君へ～」にちなみ、「誰にも見せる必要はないから、15年後の自分に向けて手紙を書け」と部員に宿題を出す。これを受けて彼らがそれぞれに書く手紙、あるいは登場人物同士の会話を通じて、彼らがそれぞれに抱えている秘密と心の傷も明らかになっていく。その後合唱部内でのある事件を経て、これまでやる気のなかった合唱部所属の男子生徒もコンクールに向けて真面目に練習に打ち込み始めるなど次第に部内のわだかまりが解消されていき、やがて長崎県大会の本番に挑むことになる。

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-16-18-48基本的にドラマ仕立てであるが、NHK『名曲アルバム』のように音楽と字幕による楽曲解説で間を持たせる部分もあり、ドラマ性の濃淡は回により演出家により異なる。西村雅彦扮するマエストロのキャラクター設定も、回によって「硬派・気難しい」から「軟派・ミーハー」まで様々であった。一方で、コンサートマスターは常に冷静沈着なキャラクター設定であった。場面設定としてはオーケストラのリハーサルシーンが最も多い。ただ、リハーサルでありながらマエストロもオーケストラ団員も正装しているなど、現実味に欠ける面もあった。

  • AKIRA (2001, 124 mins)screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-18-40-58Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00 amSunday, October 9, 2016 at 11:00 am1988年、第三次世界大戦によって東京は滅んでしまいました。そして2019年、東京はネオ東京として蘇っていました。ネオ東京には自然のものが何もなく、人工で作られたものばかりでした。そこに生きる人々は閉塞感を覚えていました。1度は第三次世界大戦のために崩壊した東京でしたが、復興し2019年の半年後に東京オリンピックを控えていたネオ東京。金田は鉄雄とともに高速道路をバイクで飛ばしていました。の時突然目の前に奇妙な子供が現れ、鉄雄は転倒し負傷してしまいます。そこに軍用ヘリが現れて、奇妙な子供26号=タカシと鉄雄を連れ去れってしまいます。翌日金田はゲリラの少女ケイと出会います。彼女は「アキラ」を探していました。そしてその頃、鉄雄が運び込まれたラボでは鉄雄の強大な力が目覚めようとしていました。夜の街で暴走する鉄雄は暴走族に襲われますが、金田たちに助けられます。しかし、鉄雄は暴走族を半殺しにします。それを止める金田に対し「命令するな！」と叫ぶと鉄雄の体から異常なエネルギーが放出されます。「アキラーー！！」と叫ぶ鉄雄の姿に金田たちは驚愕します。

ストーリーとしては凄く単純。

ゴジラが出てきて東京無茶苦茶

→自衛隊じゃ手におえない

→国連が核爆弾を使う事を決定

→それまでに長谷川博己さんの作戦でどうにかする

→どうにかなりました

 

 

Shakuhachi and Piano Duet Performance (Birmingham, AL)

Join us at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for a shakuhachi and piano duet performance by Geni Skendo and Choko Aiken. They will be performing a variety of Japanese folk and anime songs that have been arranged for the shakuhachi.  The performance will be followed by a question and answer session with the musicians. 
Choko Aiken
Mrs. Aiken is a versatile jazz pianist/keyboardist. She performs well both as a solo act and as part of groups. In 2013 she moved from Japan to the U.S. and has since performed in many local  Birmingham venues.

Fal-Con is a 2 day anime/gaming convention. Fal-Con was founded by a group of Students at the University of Montevallo with a love for games, anime, and the convention culture, and who wanted to have convention celebrating those interests that would be more accessible to people in the area. Fal-Con owes its success so far to the devotion and commitment of community members and friends of the City of Montevallo. Run through the Montevallo Sister City Commission, Fal-Con celebrates its ties to Echizen, Japan by promoting the country’s entertainment culture through an annual convention. While Fal-Con gets its name from the University of Montevallo’s mascot, the falcon, Fal-Con is a separate entity from the university and has no relations to the university itself.

江戸は下町の長屋に暮らす絵師の鉄蔵こと葛飾北斎とその娘、お栄。そして居候の善次郎。3人は書き損じが散らかった部屋を気にも留めず、日夜創作活動に励んでいた。そんな彼らのもとに鉄蔵のライバル歌川門下で若年ながら頭角を現す国直も出入りするようになる。

「親父と娘。筆二本、箸四本あればどう転んでも食っていける」と豪語するお栄ではあったが、なにかと気持ちが揺れ動く難しい時期を迎えていた。公私ともに充実のときを迎える鉄蔵も盲目で病弱の末娘に悩み、若き日の縁者の死に遭遇。婿とも衝突するなど円満とは言いがたい。駆け出し絵師として徐々に頭角を現す善治郎も才気溢れるお栄や、年下ながら売れっ子絵師の国直に引け目を感じている。国直も歌川一門の人間関係に窮屈さを感じ、自由闊達な鉄蔵門下に憧れを抱くも義理と人情の板挟みに遭っていた。

4人が遭遇する事件を軸に生き生きとした江戸庶民の生活が描かれる。

After having the club running for two years we decided to finally make an anime convention because we noticed that there isn’t many conventions around where we live. We wanted to be an affordable anime convention and wanted younger kids to get into anime.

Learn Japanese Music – Special School Caravan

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-19-15-03Starting this 2016 Fall semester, the Consulate-General of Japan in Atlanta would like to announce a new opportunity for schools offering Music classes. In this special edition of our School Caravan, students will have the chance to experience Japanese culture in the musical sphere!

In this Caravan workshop, specifically geared toward music students, our consulate staff will introduce and present on music and instruments traditionally used as accompaniment in Japanese festivals. Students will have a hands-on experience learning Japanese musical notation, tempo, and scales (as they differ from Western music) and then use this knowledge to perform, with staff guidance, a short piece of traditional festival music with the authentic Japanese flute (fuè), small taiko drums (shimè-daiko), and hand-bell (kanè).
