Japan in the News
5月1日からはいよいよ新元号『令和』に切り替わりました。
May 1st marked the beginning of a new era for Japan following His Majesty the Emperor’s abdication of the throne. The era’s name, “Reiwa”, means “Beautiful Harmony” and was taken from the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry. To celebrate, people in Japan visited famous sites, ate traditional sweets and traveled to see scenic views of Reiwa’s first sunrise.

Prime Minister Abe’s U.S. Visit
先月は、安倍首相が欧州＆北米訪問ツアーの一環としてアメリカを訪問。トランプ大統領との会談もありました。
Prime Minister Abe visited the United States last month as part of a week-long trip to Europe and North America. The visit included a summit meeting at the White House, a dinner between the two leaders and their spouses, and a round of golf. The Prime Minister commented that the two leaders “spoke in depth about various issues ranging from responses to the North Korea issue, the economy, the G20 Osaka Summit, and the global state of affairs.” This month, President Trump and the First Lady will visit Japan as the first State Guests of the Reiwa Era.

Cabinet Member Visits
4月には河野外務大臣と岩屋防衛大臣がアメリカを訪れました。
In April, Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya visited the United States. Both held bilateral meetings: Foreign Minister Kono with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Minister Iwaya with Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan. Additionally, all four convened for a committee meeting during which they affirmed their strong commitment to a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” a shared vision for a region in which all nations are sovereign, strong and prosperous.

Embassy Open House
ワシントンD.C.大使館でオープンハウスがあり、沢山のゲストに日本の藍染などの日本の伝統や食が紹介されました。
The Embassy of Japan opened its doors to the public last week for the annual Passport DC Around the World Embassy Tour. Around 6,000 guests explored our Old Residence, which offered opportunities to learn about Japanese culture, receive guidance on travel and hear about Japan’s latest feats in science and technology. Visitors were treated to samples of Japanese food by soy-sauce-maker San-J. Guests also had a chance to check out selections from Indigo Threads, our culture center’s (the JICC’s) ongoing exhibit on Japanese denim.
