The Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta is excited to welcome the Nomura Kyogen Group, performers of traditional Japanese comic theater, to Atlanta for their debut international performance on Friday, September 14th. The group’s founder is a 14th-generation Kyogen performer who also appeared in the popular Hollywood movie, “The Last Samurai.”
Kyogen has a long history in Japan. It began as comic relief between acts in traditional Noh Theatre and has evolved into an independent art form appreciated by people of all ages and from all walks of life. As Kyogen features aspects of parodies and slapstick comedy, familiarity with Japanese culture is not necessary to enjoy this universal comedy.
The Kyogen lecture and demonstration will be Friday, September 14, 2018 from noon to 1:00 pm at the Georgia State University Dunwoody Campus Auditorium. Attendance is FREE and open to the public but seating is limited and offered on a first come, first served basis. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Any large groups (5 or larger) planning to attend should contact our office to reserve advance seating by email at info@aa.mofa.go.jp or by phone at (404) 926-3023.
The Consulate General of Japan is hosting this event in association with the Japan-America Society of Georgia, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Georgia, and JapanFest Atlanta, Inc. We would also like to offer a special thanks to sponsors Georgia State University (GSU) & Perimeter College and the Japan Club of GSU’s Dunwoody Campus.
