Japan in the News

東京2020オリンピック聖火リレーで用いるトーチは、 桜をモチーフとしてデザインされたそうです。
The torches for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were announced, and as cherry blossom season reaches full bloom they couldn’t be more fitting! Fusing Japanese tradition with modern technology, the torches’ aluminum bodies were formed into the shape of cherry blossoms using the same technology that is used to manufacture Japanese bullet trains. The material also has a deeper meaning. Highlighting recovery and sustainability, the aluminum for the torches was sourced from construction waste from temporary housing built after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Tokyo 2020 has more information on both the Olympic Torch and Paralympic Torch

National Cherry Blossom Festival Kicks Off
日本からアメリカへ、友好の証として3000本の桜の木が贈られてから107年が経ちました。各地で桜まつりも始まりました  ~
Celebrating 107 years since the gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Japan, the National Cherry Blossom Festival blasted off with a talent-packed Opening Ceremony. The event featured three Japanese performers: the popular “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” The Super Live for their American debut, World Champion juggler Mochi, and violinist Ikuko Kawai. This year’s Festival includes more than 50 events from over 50 organizations. Our culture center, the JICC, is presenting Indigo Threads, an exhibition and event series that follows the rich history of indigo dyed fabric and garments in Japan.

Discussing Women’s Empowerment
国際女性デー(International Women’s Day)を記念し、日本大使館は女性のエンパワーメントを目的としたイベントを主催しました~
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Embassy of Japan hosted a Women’s Empowerment event featuring PBS NewsHour Anchor Judy Woodruff. Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies Visiting Scholar Mayumi Aikawa led the wide-ranging discussion. The talk was also an official side event for the World Assembly for Women (WAW!) and W20 conference. The WAW! conference, which recently convened in Tokyo for the fifth time, brings together leading female figures from around the world to discuss key women’s issues.

Honoring Senator Rockefeller
Throughout his career, Senator J.D. Rockefeller IV has built ties between Japan and the United States. In 2013, he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun for his significant contributions towards strengthening and promoting Japan-US relations. As his time studying in Tokyo at International Christian University (ICU) was a key chapter in that story, Ambassador Sugiyama was honored to co-host the ICU’s Conferment of an honorary doctorate upon Senator Rockefeller at the Old Residence.
