Japan’s Floating World:
Politics, Art, and Society During the Edo Period (Chapel Hill, NC)
September 28, 2019 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
FedEx Global Education Center
301 Pittsboro Street
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
The Edo period (江戸時代, Edo jidai) or Tokugawa period (徳川時代) in Japan from 1603 to 1868 was a critical period in Japanese social, economic, political and cultural history. The Carolina Asia Center, Ackland Art Museum, and North Carolina Teaching Asia Network is excited to offer a free K-12 educator workshop dedicated to the Edo period on September 28, 2019 at UNC-Chapel Hill. “Japan’s Floating World: Politics, Art, and Society during the Edo Period (1603-1868)” will allow NC educators to learn about the history of the Edo period and will investigate questions such as: Who collected and owned art and what were these forms of art? What was the political structure of Japan? What did woodblock prints tell us about society and culture?
Three lecturers, Dr. Morgan Pitelka, Dr. Yixin Chen, and Madison Folks, will introduce us to the intersections of art, culture, and politics during the Edo period during the first part of the workshop, and then we will visit the Ackland Museum to look at woodblock prints and other forms of art during the second part of the workshop.
We will close the workshop with presentations from UNC staff on K-16 Asia- related resources

Mimi Kato Ordinary Sagas (Columbia, SC)
June 14 – September 8, 2019
The Columbia Museum of Art
1515 Main Street,
Columbia, SC 29201
Mimi Kato draws on the rich history and visual traditions of Japanese culture as well as the absurd everyday elements of contemporary life and merges them in imaginary landscapes. In her lengthy artistic process, Kato photographs herself as a range of costumed characters—from everyday Japanese citizens to fantastical creatures in the forest—and embeds these images into large photomontages. Her work is narratively complex and darkly humorous.
Yayoi Kusama: Narcissus Gardens (Atlanta, GA)
April 12, 2019 – February 17, 2020 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Atlanta Botanical Gardens
1345 Piedmont Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30309
Narcissus Garden is a signature work of contemporary art created by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Narcissus Garden was first presented in 1966, when Kusama staged an unofficial installation and performance at the 33rd Venice Biennale. The silver spheres, originally made from plastic, were installed on the lawn in front of the Italian Pavilion, reflecting the landscape of the exhibition grounds. Kusama herself stood among them, barefoot and dressed in a gold kimono, alongside yard signs inscribed with the words “Narcissus Garden, Kusama” and “Your Narcissism for Sale.”
The installation is site-specific and made up of approximately 1,400 stainless steel spheres carefully arranged by staff from Kusama’s studio in Japan. These spheres can be viewed in their current location at the Atlanta Botanical Garden from the Canopy Walk, and along many of the trails leading into and out of Storza Woods.
The Narcissus Garden installation is a joint effort between the Atlanta Botanical Garden and The High Museum, which hosts Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors through Feb. 17. Narcissus Garden will remain on-view in Storza Woods through Spring.
