Suminagashi: Paper Marbling Workshop
March 1
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Eastern)
Peel Gallery
708 West Rosemary St
Carrboro, NC, 27510
Translating to “floating ink”, Suminagashi is where carbon-rich sumi inks float on water. Participants will create patterns with ink on water then transfer their designs onto paper. The interaction of wind, water and inks will delight and surprise, as students collaborate with the elements and learn a variety of techniques to achieve stunning designs. Suminagashi is the oldest known form of marbling—dating back to at least the 12th century— and is distinct from marbling practices in Turkey, Iran, and Europe.

Fashion Show & Luncheon presented by the Japan America Society of North Carolina and supported by Southern Bridge International.
Discover a rare opportunity to own a piece of Japanese artistry and history at JASNC’s Fashion Show & Luncheon Fundraiser. We are honored to auction a special collection of vintage haori generously donated by Linda Marcuson—cultural anthropologist, ceramic artist, and longtime student of Asian art and heritage.
While living in Japan in the early 1980s, Linda personally collected these exquisite garments, many crafted from luxurious silk and showcasing timeless patterns, refined craftsmanship, and rich cultural symbolism. Her decades of travel and immersion across Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan—visiting ancient kilns, temples, shrines, and museums—deepened her appreciation for enduring artistic traditions, an influence that continues to shape her own celebrated ceramic work today.
These haori are more than beautiful garments—they are wearable works of art that can elevate a modern outfit while carrying the soul of Japan’s textile heritage. Bid on a piece that blends elegance, history, and cross-cultural connection, and take home something truly extraordinary. They can also be displayed as works of art in your home.
