There seems to have been a recent change in de facto policy regarding the entry of US citizens into Canada for business purposes.

While Canada has generally accepted business travellers from the United States visa-free, it seems that they are starting to more stringently exercise their right to deny entry.

While the Canadian government website does not mention that they can deny entry to US citizens travelling for business, it is clearly mentioned in United States State Department website below:

Recently a couple of clients for another travel agency were denied entry into Canada.

Their stay was only for a couple of days and when asked they stated they were travelling for business.

While previously they were routinely granted entry without a visa, they were denied entry for this reason.

When contacting the Canadian Embassy, the Embassy confirmed that US citizens travelling to Canada for business purposes are required to have a visa.

Additionally, we were advised that any money earned in Canada would have to be reported and taxed.  The Canadian Embassy provides the forms for these declarations.

Please note that this does not affect US citizens travelling to Canada for leisure.  US tourists travelling to Canada for 180 days or less are not required to have a visa.
